In a bold step towards climate action and sustainable development, the Lagos State Government has launched the 80 Million Clean Cookstoves Project, a national initiative aimed at improving access to clean energy while reducing environmental and health risks.

Experts say the project is the biggest of its kind in Africa.

According to the government, the project will see 80 million clean cookstoves distributed across Nigeria, with Lagos State set to receive eight million units.

Unveiling the project at a press briefing held on Monday in Alausa, Ikeja, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy, Titilayo Oshodi, emphasized the project’s scale and significance.

She disclosed that the distribution of the first six million stoves will commence in Makoko, Lagos, starting in June.

“We gather here to discuss another climate initiative and to witness the launch of a historic, game-changing project that will place Nigeria at the forefront of the compliance carbon markets under UNFCCC’s Article 6.4ER framework,” Oshodi said.

She added: “The 80m Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism Clean Cookstoves Project is not just the largest clean cooking initiative in the world; it is a bold economic, social, and environmental blueprint that will deploy 80 million highly efficient, clean cookstoves across Nigeria.”

According to Oshodi, the initiative is expected to generate 1.2 billion tonnes of compliance carbon offsets and create more than 35 million green jobs nationwide.

Also speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Ope George, noted that the project is being implemented in partnership with GreenPlinth Africa.

“This partnership is more than just a formal agreement — it is a strategic leap forward in our quest to build a greener, healthier, and more inclusive Lagos,” he said. “The 80 Million Clean Cookstove Initiative represents a transformational opportunity to improve the lives of millions, especially women and children, by promoting clean energy access, reducing harmful air pollution, and curbing deforestation across vulnerable communities.”

George also commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his leadership and commitment to climate action, stating, “I also acknowledge the Special Adviser on Climate Change and Circular Economy and the entire Implementation Working Group for their dedication and foresight.”

The initiative aligns with global climate goals under the Paris Agreement and positions Nigeria as a leader in the clean energy transition, particularly through community-driven climate solutions.
