By Samuel Ogunsona
A member of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association has been apprehended in Kwara State for alleged possession of a rifle reportedly issued by the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA).
It was uncertain as at press time if the rifle was stolen or how he managed to hold possession.
The incident occurred in a community in Kwara South, an area plagued by frequent terrorist attacks, kidnappings, and other violent crimes.
According to eyewitnesses, the suspect was seen roaming the community with the rifle, sparking suspicion among residents who promptly alerted the authorities.
He was subsequently arrested and handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation.
The source revealed that the rifle was allegedly issued to Miyetti Allah members to enhance security in parts of Kwara State, particularly Kwara South.
However, the development has raised concerns about the proliferation of arms and the involvement of non-state actors in security arrangements.
The Kwara State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement on the arrest or clarify the circumstances surrounding the issuance of the rifle.
The incident has further highlighted the need for effective security measures in Kwara South, where communities have repeatedly complained about daily attacks and abductions by armed groups.
