N49.7bn Ekiti airport commences commercial flight

By Samuel Ogunsona

The Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport in Ado-Ekiti witnessed a historic moment this week as the first commercial flight, operated by United Nigeria Airlines, touched down at the airport, marking the beginning of a new era in the state’s economic outlook.

The airport, which has been built at a cost of N49.7 billion, is a boost to the state government’s commitment to critical infrastructure development.

Oyebanji was led with highly ranked Nigerians to receive the first flight at the airport.

In a statement made available to Irohinodua, the Governor noted that the investment is expected to stimulate economic growth, attract investors, and create jobs for the people of Ekiti State.

“We are bringing the markets closer to our people and the world closer to Ekiti,” Oyebanji said, urging residents to seize the opportunities that air connectivity brings.

“With this airport, we are opening Ekiti to global opportunities, particularly in agriculture, commerce, and tourism.”

The airport’s design will support the export of agro-produce, boost value chains, and reduce post-harvest losses for farmers. Oyebanji expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his economic reforms, which enabled the state to finance the project.

The Governor also acknowledged the contributions of his predecessors, including Segun Oni, Ayo Fayose, and Kayode Fayemi, who played key roles in conceiving, acquiring, and advancing the airport project.

“The making of this airport is a collective legacy of at least three Governors before me,” Oyebanji said.

Afe Babalola, founder of Afe Babalola University, was commended for his significant contributions to the project, including donating navigational aids worth $1.6 million and constructing a 100-car parking lot valued at N356 million.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, praised Oyebanji’s exceptional leadership, saying the airport would bring about opportunities for enhanced agricultural capability, new markets, and investment opportunities.

United Nigeria Airlines has pledged to provide excellent services, with plans to operate direct flights from Ekiti to other state capitals beyond Lagos and Abuja.

The successful launch of commercial flights at the Ekiti Airport is a testament to Oyebanji’s visionary leadership and commitment to developing the state’s infrastructure.
