The Kogi State Government has confirmed a dawn attack on a Cherubim and Seraphim Church in Ejiba, Yagba West Local Government Area, resulting in the abduction of the pastor, his wife, and several worshippers.
State Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, condemned the incident, describing it as “very sad and unfortunate.”
The attack, which occurred on Sunday morning, has thrown the Ejiba community into panic, with residents fleeing in search of safety.
Irohinoodua was informed that several worshipers were kidnapped during the attack.
Fanwo assured that efforts were underway to rescue the victims, stating that the incident was being investigated.
According to Fanwo, the gunmen likely hid in the community or surrounding bushes before striking. He emphasized the need for citizens to be vigilant and provide intelligence to security agencies.
“We all need to be security-conscious at this time. We also need to volunteer intelligence,” he advised.
Fanwo urged residents to exercise caution, particularly when attending worship services in isolated areas. “When you see something, say something. Avoid going to unsecured churches and mosques now.
Avoid absolutely unnecessary journeys at this time. Do not disclose your movement to anyone again,” he warned.
The state government and local authorities have been working to combat crime in the border community, but Fanwo lamented that some individuals continue to put themselves at risk by gathering in isolated areas despite the prevailing insecurity.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of worshippers in the state.
