Reports of poisoned rice causing deaths not true–Customs

By Ologeh Jospeh Chibu

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Seme Area Command, has dismissed circulating allegations that it seized and distributed contaminated rice, leading to multiple deaths, including that of a soldier in Badagry.

In a statement signed by Chief Superintendent of Customs and Public Relations Officer for the Seme Area Command, Isah Sulaiman on Wednesday and made available to Irohinoodua the Command described the claims as “entirely false, misleading, and unfounded.” The NCS emphasized that it strictly follows Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) when disposing of seized goods, ensuring transparency and adherence to existing laws.

The false narrative suggests that the Command seized and distributed rice without informing the owner, who allegedly invoked traditional powers resulting in fatalities. However, the NCS categorically denied any such incident within its Area of Responsibility (AoR), noting that no evidence supports the claim.

The statement also condemned the role of some individuals, accusing them of spreading misinformation under the guise of journalism to discredit security agencies. The NCS urged the public to disregard the story and avoid sharing false information that could provoke fear or damage the reputation of law enforcement.

Comptroller Ben Oramalugo, PhD, who heads the Seme Area Command, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to revenue generation, combating smuggling, and promoting legitimate trade while adhering to government policies and laws.
