Australia’s main grid hits record 77.9% clean energy

By Samuel Ogunsona

Australia now sources 77.9% of her energy needs from Renewable Energy, Irohinoodua has learnt.

The country’s National Electricity Market (NEM) said it has reached a new milestone in renewable energy, with clean power sources supplying a record-breaking 77.9% of electricity demand in September.

According to data from energy advisory company Global Power Energy (GPE), solar power took center stage, contributing over 55% of the renewable energy mix.

Rooftop solar generation led the charge, accounting for 43.6% of grid demand, while utility-scale solar delivered 12.1% and wind generation provided 19.8%.

Hydroelectric power contributed 2.3% to the energy mix. This impressive performance pushed fossil fuel generation to the sidelines for extended periods.

This milestone signifies a major shift in Australia’s energy landscape, with renewables now a sustained presence in the grid.

While Australia’s renewable energy target of 82% by 2030 remains a challenge, Federal Energy Minister Chris Bowen expressed confidence that the goal can be met.

Thousands of Australians installing home batteries and solar panels daily, Bowen believes Australia is on track to achieve its ambitious renewable energy targets.

However, Australia has continued to push the boundaries of renewable energy adoption, as the country is set to host COP31 in 2026, a significant event that will bring global leaders and experts together to discuss climate action and sustainable development.

This milestone provides Australia with an opportunity to showcase its commitment to reducing carbon emissions and transitioning to a cleaner energy future.

Hosting COP31 in 2026 will not only demonstrate Australia’s commitment to global climate leadership but also provide a platform to share its experiences and innovations in renewable energy with the world.
