Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona WAJA

One of the world’s longest serving King has passed on.
He is the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona. He “Waja” on Sunday, family sources told Irohinoodua.
Oba Adetona came to the throne on April 02, 1960 making him one of the longest serving traditional rulers in the world.
The paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, joined his ancestors at age 91, few hours after the death of his long time friend, Muhammadu Buhari, on Sunday.
Oba Adetona, who ascended the throne in 1960, was one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning traditional rulers and a highly respected voice among Yoruba monarchs and across the country.
He leaves behind a legacy of leadership, wisdom, and dedication to the development of Ijebuland.
Oba Sikiru Olukayode Adetona, Ọgbagba Agbotewole II, was born on May 10, 1934, in Imupa, Ijebu Ode, into the esteemed Royal House of Anikinaiya of Ijebuland. His father, Prince Rufai Adetona Adeleke, was a son of Oba Adeleke, Ọgbagba Agbotewole I, who reigned as the Awujale of Ijebuland from 1895 to 1906.
Oba Adetona’s mother, Ajibabi Onaṣile, hailed from Ijebu Igbo. The Royal House of Anikinaiya was founded by his great-grandfather, Oba Anikilaya, Figbajoye Agboogunsa I, who ruled Ijebuland from 1821 to 1854.
This royal lineage claims descent from Olu-Iwa, the semi-legendary first Awujale and Ọba.
This rich heritage played a significant role in shaping Oba Adetona’s life and reign as the Awujale of Ijebuland, a position he held with great distinction for over six decades.
