EKSG issues advisory on managing heat waves for public safety

The Ekiti State Ministry of Health and Human Services has issued directives to citizens on how to manage the surging heat waves.

In a statement made available to Irohinoodua signed by the Commissioner for Health Dr Oyebanji Filani urged residents to take appropriate caution with current inclement weather and energy (light) situation, which can pose serious health risks. To ensure the safety and well-being of our community during such extreme weather events, we advise the following measures:

  1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid beverages containing caffeine or alcohol, as they can contribute to dehydration.
  2. Stay Cool: Spend time in well-ventilated spaces.
  3. Dress Appropriately: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing made of breathable fabrics. Protect yourself from the sun by wearing hats, sunglasses, and applying sunscreen.
  4. Limit Outdoor Activities: Minimize outdoor activities, especially during the hottest parts of the day (usually between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.). If outdoor activities are necessary, take frequent breaks in shaded or cool areas.
  5. Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Keep an eye on children, elderly family members, and those with chronic medical conditions, as they are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. Ensure they are staying hydrated and cool.
  6. Never Leave Children or Pets in Vehicles: Temperatures inside vehicles can rise rapidly, even with windows cracked open. Never leave children, elderly adults, or pets unattended in parked vehicles, as it can lead to heatstroke or death.
  7. Be Aware of Symptoms: Learn the signs of heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Symptoms may include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, headache, and confusion. Seek medical attention immediately if you or someone else experiences these symptoms.
  8. Stay Informed: Stay updated on weather forecasts and heat advisories issued by the government. Follow their recommendations and guidelines for staying safe during heat waves.
  9. By following these guidelines and looking out for one another, we can minimize the health risks associated with heat waves and ensure the well-being of our community.
