Lagos maternal food now for to 5,000 pregnant women

By Omolade Adegbuyi

Five thousand pregnant women across Lagos six health districts will now benefit from the State Government nutrition programme.

The figure is more than double last year’s avarage.

The project is sponsored by the Lagos State Government as part of its annual maternal and child nutrition intervention mission.

The programme is aimed at addressing nutritional needs during pregnancy, a critical period when adequate intake of essential nutrients supports maternal health, healthy fetal growth and safer pregnancy outcomes.

The intervention, implemented under the 2026 Mother, Infant and Child Development Programme, is being coordinated through the Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement.

The Health District I edition was launched in Abekoko, Agege, on Monday, with the programme also designed to link vulnerable families to appropriate healthcare services.

Speaking at the flag-off, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Afolabi Tajudeen, said maternal and child health remained important to the state’s long-term development.

Beyond providing nutritional support, the initiative can help connect pregnant women with healthcare services, enabling timely access to antenatal care, health education and other interventions needed to protect mothers and their babies.

The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Health District I, Sola Pitan, urged residents to make greater use of public health facilities and take precautions against diphtheria.

Pitan said the state government provides diphtheria treatment free and urged residents who develop symptoms or suspect exposure to seek medical attention without delay.

He also encouraged residents to register for Ilera Eko, the state’s health insurance scheme, while urging parents and caregivers to ensure that their children received routine immunisation.

The Executive Chairman of Orile-Agege LCDA, Akinola Idowu, said the programme provided residents with access to a range of services, including routine immunisation, family planning, vitamin A supplementation, malnutrition screening, birth registration, maternal healthcare, HIV screening, and tuberculosis screening and treatment.
