The American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) Africa Region has announced the election of a Yoruba geoscientist Mr. Seye Ekun as its Vice President for the term July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026.
In a statement issued on Wednesday and made available to Irohinoodua, the association said Ekun, who became a full voting member of the AAPG in 2000, has held several leadership roles within the organisation. He served as Treasurer of the Africa Region between 2020 and 2022, coordinated the AAPG/Imperial Barrel Award programmes, and organised the first AAPG Geosciences Technology Workshop in Africa. Since 2017, he has also been a member of the Enhancing Mature Fields’ Life Cycles Committee.
Ekun’s contributions have earned him notable recognition, including the AAPG Distinguished Service Award in 2023 and a 25-year membership honour in 2024. He also served as a Certified Petroleum Geologist with the Division of Professional Affairs from 2020 to 2023.
“Now, stepping into the role of Vice President, Seye is poised to lead a community that spans more than 18,000 members in ninety-four countries,” the association said.
Describing his appointment as “a celebration of a career built on passion, volunteerism, and the pursuit of excellence in geoscience,” the AAPG expressed confidence that his tenure would energise the Africa Region, foster innovative projects, and advance its mission to promote scientific inquiry and sustainable practices across the continent.
“The region celebrates this milestone and looks forward to a future where his vision continues to shape and uplift the geoscience community across Africa and beyond,” the statement added.
