Breaking: Daring herdsmen take battle to Benue capital, Makurdi, scores killed

Armed herdsmen have attacked Makurdi, the Capital of Benue State in a dawn raid.

The attack was seen as a bold message that the herdsmen are capable of attacks in the places considered as most sacred.

The devastating attack carried out by suspected herdsmen took place at Mtsewnem, Akondutyough village in the North Bank area of Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

The incident occurred around 3:00 a.m..

Residents were caught off guard in their sleep. Irohinoodua was informed that several people were feared dead, and many others injured.

According to sources, the assailants stormed the community, attacking residents with apparent impunity. The attack has sparked widespread concern and condemnation, with many calling for urgent action to address the growing security challenges in the region.

A humanitarian worker and human rights advocate,
Ukan Kurugh described the attack as “deeply disturbing.”

He expressed his grief for the families who lost loved ones and the wounded, emphasizing the need for collective action to demand justice and security for the affected communities.

Kurugh noted that the attackers seem undeterred by the presence of state and federal authorities, having defied the President, the Governor, and the entire security apparatus.

He vowed to continue speaking out against such attacks and demanding action from relevant authorities.

Attempts to reach the Benue State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Edet Udeme, were unsuccessful at the time of this report.

The incident has raised concerns about the effectiveness of security measures in the state and the need for a more robust response to address the growing insecurity.
