Newsbreak: Terrorists invade Ekiti, kill three, kidnap four people

By Ogunsona Samuel

Heavily armed terrorists have invaded Iyemero in Ajoni Local Government of Ekiti State.

As at this evening, the terrorists have killed three people while four others were kidnapped.

Iyemero is locate on the fringe of Ekiti State being the last town between Ekiti and Kwara State. It is also few kilometers from Kogi State.

Witnesses told Irohinoodua that the terorists suspected to be Fulani first came late last week killing the head of the vigilante group in the community.

Iyemero is also home to Prince Ogungbemi, the Ajoni local Government Chairman.

The attack is coming amidst US President Donald Trump’s plan to bomb terrorist cells in Nigeria.

At the weekend, the Alliance for Yoruba Democratic Movement, [AYDM), a coalition of 130 Pan Yoruba groups warned te South West states to beware of the fallout of US plan to attack terorist cells in Nigeria.

Witnesses told Irohinoodua that the terrorists have a base between Iyemero and Eruku, stretching to Egbe and Odo-Ere in Kogi State. The source said the area has become a terrorist hub. Ironically, a military camp with more than 80 soldiers were stationed less than three kilometers to Iyemero. They soldiers encamp at Ele, Itapaji Dam which was built by the old Western Nigerian Government led at that time by Gen. David Jemibewon (rtd).

The terrorists were said to have invaded Iyemero in the early hours or Sunday shooting, as locals rushed into the forest.

Our source said some locals are already fleeing the community.

“It was like war. We knew by their physique and intonation they were Fulani. They came with AK-47. They killed two people and then kidnapped four others including women,” a Chief in the town who does not wish to be named told Irohinoodua.

One of those killed, sources said was a Tiv farmer from Benue State.

The Chief said Amotekun Corps came later and that as at press time, they were combing the forest for the armed men. But one Amotekun official who chatted with Irohinoodua said his command could not do much because the Federal Government does not allow them to carry proportional weapons to counter the terrorists.

“They operate from the forest axis between Iyemero, Itapaji, Egbe and Ikoro end of Kogi State. They have turned the area into axis of evil. Its unfortunate that we are helpless and at the mercy of blood sucking terrorists,” Mutiu Ahmed, a native of Ajoni told Irohinoodua.

He commended the work of the Ajoni Local Government Chairman saying that since his inception, he had tried to fight terrorism with limited resources.

“The State Governor, Mr Abiodun Oyebanji and the Local Government Chairman Ogungbemi are working hard. The problem is the overcentralised political and security architecture of the country that limits the power of command of local political actors.”
