A country that insists that Political Parties MUST HAVE NATIONALSPREAD is FASCIST

Lessons from Canada

By Emmanuel Akinwumi

Yesterday, Quebec, the second biggest province in Canada held provincial election. When the election was called on August 27, the Coalition Avenir Quebec (CAQ), a Quebec nationalist party was the governing party. It won majority governments in 2018 and 2022. Prior to 2018, Parti Quebecois, a Quebec separatist party was the governing party. Both the Coalition Avenir Quebec and Parti Quebecois only exist in Quebec, they do not field candidates for election outside of Quebec. They both make it clear that their allegiance is to Quebec and to Quebec only.

Coalition Avenir Quebec rejects Canadian federalism and wants greater autonomy for the nation of Quebec within Canada, Parti Quebecois rejects Canada, its only objective is to lead Quebec nation out of Canada as a sovereign and independent country.

When the election was called on August 27, CAQ was not only the governing party with 90 out of the 127 seats in parliament, it was leading the other four parties in the poll. Within the five weeks election campaign, the party popularity collapsed. It did not win a single seat! Parti Quebecois is returned to power (although a minority government) after 8 years in the wilderness.

Two take aways from the election:

  • in politics, a month is eternity – yesterday CAQ was in power with comfortable majority, today they have no representation in parliament;
  • in Nigeria, both CAQ and Parti Quebecois would be outlawed, in fact, they could not be registered as political parties because they have no national spread. The leaders of the Parti Quebecois would have been executed for treason. In Canada they are allowed to operate and propagate their views as long as they do so peacefully and contest for power freely.
  • The power of political tolerance, inclusiveness and real democracy in Canada!
