US Lawmakers seek sanctions on Miyetti Allah, others over killings

The United States House of Representatives has urged the Departments of State and Treasury to impose targeted sanctions on Miyetti Allah and other individuals and organizations linked to terrorism in Nigeria.
The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) and Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore is believed to collaborate with violent Fulani extremists.
The resolution, H. Res. 860, was introduced by Rep. Christopher Smith and co-sponsored by Rep. Paul Huizenga.
The lawmakers cited widespread attacks on civilians, destruction of places of worship, and a pattern of impunity in their call for action. They commended US President Donald Trump for redesignating Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC), which they believe will enhance diplomatic efforts to encourage the Nigerian government to protect religious minorities and uphold fundamental human rights.
“The designation of Nigeria as a CPC will enhance diplomatic efforts to encourage the Nigerian government to take necessary actions to protect religious minorities and uphold fundamental human rights,” the resolution stated.
The resolution also urges the US government to provide immediate humanitarian assistance directly to faith-based groups supporting internally displaced people in Nigeria’s middle belt states.
It recommends tying US foreign assistance to demonstrable steps by Nigeria to prevent persecution, prosecute alleged perpetrators, and care for displaced populations.
The Nigerian government has rejected the US designation, saying it is based on a wrong perception of the country’s security challenges.
Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris stated that terrorism and violent crime have affected both Christians and Muslims, rejecting claims of state complicity.
