Terrorists kill five police officers in Yoruba area of Kogi

By Samuel Ogunsona

Gunmen have struck again in Kogi State, killing a total of five police officers in separate attacks on Sunday.

The gory incidence took place at Yagba East and Lokoja local government areas.

In recent months, Kogi has been under ceaseless terrorist raids and attacks. Only last week, three Vigilante members and two police men were killed by the terrorists.

In Kwara State, the terrorists have also invaded some Yoruba Communities, sacking residents in some instances.

According to reports received by Irohinoodua, two officers were killed in Yagba East, specifically in the Isanlu area along Ilafin Road, while three officers lost their lives in Kupa Ward, Lokoja II state constituency.

This incident marks the second attack in the past two weeks, following the killing of three officers on September 10 in Egbe, a town bordering Kwara State.

The recent attacks have raised widespread concern and condemnation from local leaders.

Dr. Joshua Dare, Executive Chairman of Yagba East Local Government Area, expressed deep shock and profound grief over the incident. “It is with profound shock and grief that we received the sad news of the brutal killing of two gallant officers of the Nigeria Police Force, attached to MOPOL 70, who lost their lives today, Sunday, September 21, 2025, in a deadly ambush by unknown assailants along Ilafin Road, Isanlu.”

The council chairman described the incident as “not only an attack on the Nigeria Police Force but also an assault on the peace and security of our land.

It represents a calculated attempt by enemies of progress to destabilize our society and instill fear in our people.”

He called on relevant security agencies to immediately investigate the heinous act, apprehend the perpetrators, and ensure they face the full weight of the law.

Dr. Dare reiterated his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property across all communities, emphasizing that Yagba East would continue to collaborate with the Kogi State Government, the Nigeria Police Force, the military, and other sister agencies to maintain peace and security in the area.

“These two officers of MOPOL 70 died in active service; they are martyrs of peace and guardians of justice. We must honour them not just with words but by ensuring their sacrifice is not in vain. The enemies of peace must be defeated, and Yagba East must continue to stand strong in unity and resilience.”

The state police command has yet to issue an official statement on the incident, and attempts to reach the command’s spokesman, William Aya, were unsuccessful.

The Kogi State Government has condemned the attacks and vowed to deal with the perpetrators.
