A Yoruba, Igbo Middle Belt and Southern Nigeria conference which holds today in the United States will call for the dissolution of Nigeria. The meeting expected to draw some 3000 delegates is the first of its kind in Nigerian modern history.
Irohinoodua has been informed that the gathering which begins 10pm Nigerian time today will call on the international community to work towards the dissolution of Nigeria, a country put together by the British in 1914 but riddled with endless strife, ethnic suspicion, terrorism, one civil war and a spineless political class that literally dance while Rome burns.
Nigeria is home to some 200 or more ethnic groups. Since the country’s independence in 1960, instability,
corruption, poverty and distress have ruled the 65 post self rule years.
The Yoruba, Igbo declaration draws participants from Middle-Belt and Southern Nationalities in Nigeria.
Leading the summit are Professor Banji Akintoye, Dr Chukwuma Ihenacho among many others.
It is first time Yoruba, Igbo, Middle Belt and Southern ethnic minorities are meeting to forge a common front for self determination.
The organisers said Nigeria’s forceful amalgamation in 1914 has brought tears and sorrow to ethnic nationalities that make up the country today.
The gathering holds at 253, St Peters Street, South West Atlanta
In a preliminary statement made available to Irohinoodua, the organisers said they “are now calling the attention of the world to the collaboration for the deamalgamation of Nigeria for people’s security and safety.”
They noted that
the time has come for Igbo, Yoruba and other ethnic groups in the Middle Belt and in Southern Nigeria are questioning the amalgamation of the country which they claim stiffle the growth a and prosperity of the people.
They asked “Why were we joined together by force and why was the union not dissolved before Nigeria independence in 1960.”
The leaders said the Yoruba, Igbo, Middle Belt and other ethnic groups in Southern Nigeria are going to be declaring in a press conference on 22nd January 2026 that there is now a strong collaboration of the indigenous people’s of Southern Nigeria working actively for the dissolution of Nigeria and we call our international friends and partners to join us in this quest.”
Around the same time, Professor Akintoye is scheduled to be honoured on the same on the same day, (today) by the Geargia State Legislature.
The event will be hosted by State Representative Debra Bazemore. Akintoye will be recognised for his contribution to “education, history, public service and the preservation of Yoruba heritage.”
