Newsbreak: Police arrest cops for taking bribe from ICPC Chairman

Some policemen have been arrested for extorting the Chairman, Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Aliyu (SAN).
He was asked to pay N53,000 as bribe. The policemen in Abuja mounted an illegal roadblock. The ICPC Chairman fell victim. The police did not know their latest victim leads one of the countries biggest anti-corruption institution.
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command arrested the four police officers.
The police men forcefully took ₦53,000 from the anti corruption tzar at an illegal checkpoint in Abuja.
Reports said the police officers never knew their latest victim was the Chairman of ICPC who was compelled to take the money from a nearby Point of Sale (POS).
The police later shared the loot among themselves.
FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi said the crime was committed on Monday.
He told journalists in Abuja.
He described the officers as “criminals” who have no place in the Nigeria Police Force.
He said the suspects left their official duty posts and converged around the Banex area of Wuse.
They eventually mounted a roadblock from where they extorted travellers.
The FCT police boss said “They extorted the Chairman of the ICPC of ₦53,000. They took him to a POS, he withdrew the money, paid the charges and they shared the money among themselves.”
He said there is a gang in the police that runs extortion syndicate.
He spoke further “We got all of them. We are going to make sure they are severely punished. Those that are going to be dismissed will definitely be dismissed,” Sanusi said.
He said the Inspector General of Police has since stopped the practice of mounting road blocks and extorting Nigerians
He said “You cannot stop anybody on the road and ask the person to bring out his phone for search. If any policeman stops you and asks to search your phone, don’t agree. Call the police emergency lines and we will ask them why,” he said.
He said the policemen will face the full wrath of the law.
