Sanwo-Olu leads climate change campaign to London ahead COP31

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has intensified the Climate Change campaign on the global scene.
This week Sanwo-Olu leads the state’s delegation to London Climate Action Week 2026 ahead of COP31.
The move follows his earlier leadership of Lagos’ delegation to COP28 in Dubai, where the state pushed for subnational action on emissions and resilience.
The Governor’s key engagement will be the Local Climate Action Summit at Guildhall, London, hosted by Bloomberg Philanthropies.
The summit is billed as the centrepiece for subnational governments ahead of COP31 and will bring together governors, premiers, presidents, ministers and senior regional leaders from around the world to advance multilevel collaboration and accelerate climate implementation ahead of COP31.
According to the circular made available to Irohinodua, a major outcome expected in London is Lagos formalising its entry into the Under2 Coalition, the world’s largest network of states and regions committed to net-zero.
The proposed signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Climate Group, which serves as the Secretariat to the Under2 Coalition, represents a non-binding commitment that aligns with Lagos State’s existing climate ambitions and priorities.
If signed, the MoU “would position Lagos alongside more than 180 states and regions worldwide and provide an important platform for showcasing the State’s climate leadership and strengthening collaboration.”
Lagos will also take its climate finance model to investors. On 22 June, the Office of the Special Adviser on Climate Change and Circular Economy will host an executive roundtable titled,
Financing State-Determined Contributions: Connecting Climate Capital to Africa’s Most Investment-Ready Cities, from 14:00 to 15:00.
The high-level session will bring together investors, development finance institutions, climate funds, corporates, policymakers and technical partners to explore practical pathways for mobilising capital and accelerating the implementation of Lagos State’s climate priorities through its pioneering State-Determined Contributions (SDCs) framework.
